Kelly’s story

A parent’s story

Kelly requested help from the Parent Support Specialist after her 7 year old daughter, Sally, received a diagnosis of autism. This meant that Kelly had specific behaviours that were dominating family life  especially in the mornings when Kelly had to help Sally and her siblings get ready for school. Kelly felt a constant state of anxiety about how her daughter might react to new situations and people. Kelly was worried that other people would look and regard her as a poor parent with no control over her child.

With the help of the Parent Support Specialist, Kelly was able to recognise that she needed to establish family friendly routines with Sally, that gave Sally a sense of independence and safety while also reducing the unexpected and not over stimulating her with too many loud requests and demands. Sally felt secure with a new established routine that took into account her sensory needs and Kelly felt calmer and less anxious about getting out of the house in the morning with a much calmer little girl.

Kelly also felt the Parent Support Specialist gave her the space and time to think about how hard it could be to parent her unique little girl and the impact of Sally’s diagnosis on her. The Parent Support Specialist helped Kelly to see the very special parent Kelly was and to raise her self efficacy with regard to her role as a Mum.
