Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy

Our Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist understands how challenging daily life can be for children and young people. For some, this can feel completely overwhelming and can mean that it is really hard to get on with everyday things. Our specialist is here to help.

What does this mean?

The job of a child or adolescent is to go to school/college, as well as to socialise, access activities and clubs in the community and to develop the independence to be ready to embark on adult life. Sometimes emotional or mental health difficulties stand in the way of those things.

How do we know if our child needs this help?

You may be worried that your child or young person is struggling with challenges associated with adolescence, school or relationships and friendships, and that he or she may be seeming isolated or withdrawn as a result. You may even have a child or young person who has become burnt out by the pressures they are experiencing and might not be able to get to school. If you have any worries concerning your child or young person’s emotional or mental health then we are keen to let you know that you are not alone. We are here to listen and will certainly help if we can. We understand how challenging daily life can be for children and young people. For some, this can feel completely overwhelming and can mean that it is really hard to get on with everyday things.  Our Specialist is able to help your child or young person with any of the following:

  • Creative activities including the therapeutic use of play

  • Understanding and managing anxieties

  • Emotional regulation skills

  • Developing effective coping skills

  • Interpersonal effectiveness – positive communication skills

  • Engagement sessions and relationship building

  • Behaviour activation – for low mood and depression

  • Community outreach and accessing positive activities

  • Relationship and communication skills

  • Recovering from difficult and traumatic experiences

Please be aware that for those with the most serious mental health difficulties Consultant Psychiatric support should be gained from the NHS.

How does it work?

Our Specialist is able to help in two ways.

She can carry out an assessment to explore your child or young person’s emotional and mental health needs so that she is able to explain what the challenges might be and to then make recommendations for how to bring about positive changes.  The feedback that is given will be done with the consent of the young person if they are old enough for this permission to be needed.

Secondly, she can embark on some weekly or fortnightly sessions with your child or young person to do some exploratory work and then start to build an alternative narrative with the aim of bringing about positive changes and building effective resilience.  There will always be scope for using creative activities within the sessions as a medium for facilitating engagement in a non-threatening way.  Any information your child or young person shares will be confidential, with the caveat of understanding that should a safeguarding concern be identified then necessary onward communication will be needed.

Our Specialist can come to see your child or young person at home, school or in the community.

We will always put your child or young person first

Every member of the Now, Next & Then team prides themselves on using extensive experience to offer care, expertise, knowledge and help at the time your child or young person needs it most. We have set ourselves high standards so you can feel confident that you are gaining what you would expect from an independent service. Above all things, we are motivated by your child or young person and for the time that we are with him or her, or talking to you or other members of your child or young person’s team, then he or she is our sole concern. We are constant advocates for the children and young people we work with and this approach is shared by every member of the Now, Next & Then team.

What can we expect?

You can expect a genuinely caring approach to your child or young person, and you. Our Specialist believes that being creative allows a space for young people to find a narrative from where they can be supported to feel empowered to believe in themselves. She feels passionately about helping young people to understand themselves better and in supporting them to work out their own solutions to challenges, and by doing so, lasting changes are brought about in the present and for their futures too.
